Emerging artist J Maskrey lives and works in Los Angeles. J Maskrey’s works graphically translate the power of the natural world using the vocabulary of mythic imaginary. J’s works are at once dramatic and mysterious, conjuring nuanced environments that represent cycles of life and death, regeneration, growth and survival. Through her work, we are able to inhabit these liminal zones where there is no sign of human civilization to be found.

J Maskrey’s story is an international one; she grew up in Hong Kong, was educated in Australia, and made her mark in London and Paris with a creative career path that took her through many other major cities. Relocating to Los Angeles in 2019, she began her dedicated painting practice, and has not looked back. Enrolling into the Specialized Program in Painting at UC Berkeley. Upon completion of the program, her painting professor advised that she pursue painting full time. In 2024, J completed the Post Baccalaureate program in Visual Arts at UC Berkeley, and staged her debut solo show, ‘GIANTS.’ The exhibition was inspired by her experience of the great Sequoia forests of Northern California. Also in 2024, Maskrey was accepted into the MFA program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she will graduate with an MFA in 2026.

J’s statement “Although I wasn’t born in America, my art practice was. I am proud to be formally trained here in the USA at the most prestigious institutes in the world. My work is about beauty, destruction and transformation.
